Are you a fraidy cat?

I took my fam to Chicago this summer and found the Bean endlessly entertaining.  Have you ever noticed how we sometimes see ourselves in a completely different way than others see us?

I was at the bank this week funding a hard money loan when I ran into a friend of mine.  He asked me “do you get nervous when you send money out?”.

YES.  SO NERVOUS.

It doesn’t matter if it’s a small amount or a larger amount, I get fearful every time I one: make a hard money loan and two: wire the money.  People often ask me how I do the deals I do, “isn’t it scary?”.  And yea, I’m the biggest fraidy cat out there.  BUT, I won’t let it paralyze me.

Over the years, I’ve learned that I’m a very scared individual. But I’ve also learned that with most things, you can mitigate risk.  For loans, I can loan to good people, which helps decrease the likelihood of a default.  And I can use collateral to decrease the impact if there IS a default.  For wiring, I make sure to always print the directions out, look the destination bank up online, then call to verbally confirm wire instructions.

No matter how much prep or investigation or education you do, there’s always a chance that something goes wrong.  But the biggest mistake is to use that as a reason for inaction.  Opportunity lies on the other side of fear, and dang it, I want to be a person who recognizes and receives opportunity.

When have you been able to push past your fear and find opportunity?  Can you reply here to share and inspire me?
